In June 2012, a draft Royal Decree was made available for public information approving the basic procedure for energy efficiency certification in existing buildings. All buildings (or parts of them) that are built, sold or rented are required to have an energy efficiency certificate . This will have a very significant impact on construction in Spain, as the owner is required to carry out and maintain the energy certification of his property.

With the recent publication in the BOE, the line of improving linkedin data energy efficiency in both new and existing buildings continues to be deepened. The changes are going to be very important and rapid, so both administrations and autonomous communities must be prepared for all the changes that are coming.

Looking back in history, Europe has always had a clear commitment to energy efficiency in buildings, and Directive 2002/91/EC introduced mandatory energy certification for all buildings in the European Union. In Spain, until now, and since 2007, with the approval of Royal Decree 47/2007, the energy certification procedure for buildings only affected the certification of newly constructed buildings.

The correct use of energy must be a priority objective in each of the actions, both at an individual and collective level in our country, mainly because it is an increasingly scarce resource and, consequently, more expensive . The energy consumed by our buildings represents a very important percentage of the final energy consumption of all of Spain, and is around 60%, according to Eurostat.

Energy efficiency is no longer seen as just one of the policies to curb climate change and achieve sustainable societies, but also as the application of policies that lead to the rational and efficient use of energy in such important areas as construction.

Spain is a country with an external energy dependence of approximately 80% , which is much higher than the European average. Improving energy efficiency is therefore a crucial factor in being more competitive and less dependent on possible increases in energy costs, with the impact that this has on our economy.
