Zues Kerravala, founder and principal analyst at ZK Research, discusses on Network Computing the findings of Zscaler's 2023 VPN Risk Report , which finds that organizations are beginning to prioritize the adoption of Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) technology because virtual private networks (VPNs) can expose them to a variety of cyber threats.
tool for businesses to securely connect remote workers to their networks. The recent surge in remote work has only accelerated this trend, with 84% of organizations primarily using VPNs for this purpose. However, only a small percentage of organizations use VPNs for unmanaged devices, highlighting the risks of this approach.
These are the findings of a Zscaler report based on an ecuador mobile database survey of 382 IT and cybersecurity professionals conducted in June 2023. The study examines the challenges of VPN management, user experience issues, growing risks of cyberattacks, and the overall impact on security. Below is a summary of the key findings.
With 70% of users using VPNs daily in their daily activities, the quality and reliability of these services are crucial. However, problems often arise when using VPNs, such as slow connections (reported by 25% of respondents), dropped connections (21%), and inconsistencies between users across platforms (16%).
Interestingly, despite the high frequency of VPN usage and constant cybersecurity threats, users consider VPN security to be a less significant issue. In terms of user satisfaction, 72% of IT professionals are dissatisfied with their VPN experience, highlighting the need for more reliable and user-friendly remote access solutions.
The report also found that companies face challenges in managing VPN infrastructure. According to 22% of respondents, the most significant challenge is balancing VPN performance with user experience. Troubleshooting VPN connections and the need for constant software updates are also worth noting. Only 9% of IT professionals cited increased costs for VPN infrastructure as a major challenge.
