If you only have four seconds to grab attention, you need a great subject line. You also need a respectable “From” name.

Brian Gardner is at the top of that list. We subscribe to his mailing list because he is always insightful and thought-provoking. Sometimes he tries to sell things. Sometimes he doesn't. But we'll read his emails.

Here is an email from Thumbtack, a microeconomics company.

The subject line promises “Easy pricing estimates for all your projects.” That’s enticing. If we need something done and we decide to delegate it, we might succeed.

But what about the next one? The one from Mike at the Meat Box?

Mike said in his subject line, “You need to hear this.”

And companies consistently use a great subject line in English called a “hook.” When you read that subject line, the first thing that comes to mind is, “Maybe we need to hear this.”

What should you take away from this inbox peek? The four-second rule is important. If you want your e-commerce email marketing to be successful, you have to grab your subscribers’ attention from the subject line.
