Do they have the necessary skills within the organization or within their scope? This can’t just mean SEOs. It means are they scoping appropriately for content and development needs?

✓ Process
What about the process? Are they actually using a defined and continuously improving process for incorporating search? This is a process of involving organic search experts in the right projects at the right moments.

✓ Planning
What about planning? Often we see clients looking very reactively and after the fact. We want to get to a point with an organization where it’s planned in advance, it’s proactively involved, and it’s always aligned with the brand, business or campaign goals.

✓ Knowledge
Next is knowledge. We know this industry is complex. There are a lot of moving pieces. We want to know how knowledgeable the organization is about search. This doesn’t necessarily mean how to do SEO, but perhaps its importance or impact or results. How committed are they to learning more through reading or training or conferences? At the very least, the organization they’re hiring to do search needs to be exceptionally knowledgeable about it.
