Tumblr is a microblogging platform founded in 2007 by David Karp . Tumblr allows users to easily create their own blog, to which they can then add text , photos , videos , or audio tracks . Each such post can be "reblogged" by other users, thereby adding it to their own blog, perhaps with a comment, which other people can then take from them. Users can tag posts in a similar way to Twitter . Tumblr currently hosts 542 million blogs, some of which belong to various celebrities (singer Taylor Swift, writer Neil Gaiman) or companies ( Netflix ).
Tumblr has a very specific vibe as a platform. In 2017, Tumblr was purchased by Verizon, under whose leadership the service completely banned all pornography and similar content, which immediately caused Tumblr to lose almost a third of its users in a three-month period. This move buried a significant part of the platform, and the service's decline continues to this day, albeit at a much slower pace. In 2019, Tumblr was acquired by Automattic , the company behind the WordPress web platform . Automattic apparently has no plans to lift the ban on adult content, but we'll see if it can revive Tumblr in other ways.
