2. The reliability of news increases through your statement

For reputation management, make sure that sources are put into context. What is the organization based on? Is it an independent news source? Are there financiers behind it? Or perhaps it adheres to a certain religious belief? This interesting article from 2015 about independent newsrooms in the Netherlands states: “The fact that the importance of journalistic independence will only increase in the next five years is partly because the threats to that independence are becoming greater.”

A pitfall in the spread of fake news is that organizations do not know what to do. And then they do nothing when phone number library incriminating (fake) news is released. Realize that you have influence with a statement. A statement or quote from your organization shows that the news is real. It takes the sting out of the conversation and gives you the opportunity to take a position. Articles with a statement from an organization are more likely to be considered by readers as the truth than a fake news article. It increases credibility. Whether or not to respond to news is therefore a careful consideration, but it contributes to the reputation you have.

Within reputation management, you can largely cover which news about your organization seems credible or not. Is your organization facing problems with regard to the environment? Then actively communicate what you are doing in this area. Communicating openly, (pro)actively and honestly contributes to the ability of people to assess the credibility of news that comes from other sources.

3. Take control: data for online reputation management
The importance of data for reputation management continues to grow. The amount of data that organizations have at their disposal is also increasing. The demand for tools to collect that data and extract insights for data-driven decisions is also increasing.
