In 2011, Facebook added 845 million users, 37% more than the previous year, located mainly in the United States (157 million), Indonesia (42 million), India (41 million), Brazil (35 million), Mexico (31 million), Turkey (31 million), United Kingdom (30 million), Philippines (27 million), France (24 million) and Germany (22 million).

Facebook is the largest social network. Yet, there are countries where it's not the most popular, nor even the most used . Here are five local social networks that can stand up to it:

1. Vkontakte .
Its origins are similar (or so they try to convey) to those of Facebook: in country email list 2006, Pavel Durov, a recent graduate of St. Petersburg State University, created what was initially a site only for Russian students, and which is now Russia's largest social network . It has more than 110 million users , 70% of whom are in Russia, but also in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus. It is ranked 61st globally on Alexa and 31st in Russia, and its members are predominantly between 18 and 35 years old . Translated into more than 20 languages, in early 2012 it announced a possible IPO this year or next. Interestingly, in May 2011, the Russian Ministry of the Interior decided to open a Vkontakte group to "engage with its audience."
