Method 1. Track file downloads in WordPress using MonsterInsights
If your WordPress site offers free downloads, you may not feel the need to manage or control them.
However, it's always a good practice to track file downloads. This allows you to see which are the most popular free downloads and where to invest resources in creating new content.
Currently, Google Analytics does not automatically support file download tracking. The good news is that you can track downloads using MonsterInsights, the best Google Analytics plugin for WordPress.
First, you need to install and activate the MonsterInsights plugin. If you need help, you can check out our step-by-step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.
You then need to connect WordPress to your Google Analytics account, which is very easy to do with MonsterInsights. You can follow the instructions in our guide to installing Google Analytics in WordPress.
Once the plugin is set up, no further configuration is required. It will automatically start tracking file downloads as events.
To see statistics about who we are, simply go to the Insights report and switch to the Publishers tab.
