US takes a step closer to banning TikTok as long as it depends on China

TikTok, the popular short-video platform, is once again in the middle of a bitter battle in the United States, where lawmakers and officials are seeking to separate it from ByteDance, its Chinese parent company . If this measure is not complied with within six months, TikTok could face an outright ban in the country.


The battle in Congress: what's at stake
The overwhelming passage of the bill in the House of Representatives, by a vote of 352 in favor and 65 against, marks a significant milestone in the fight for national security and data privacy. National security concerns have been the main driver behind this bill. The US fears that TikTok, under the control of a Chinese company, poses a threat to the country’s security, potentially allowing for spying and manipulation by the Chinese government.

China has strongly rejected these accusations, calling the move an act of “bullying.” TikTok has also repeatedly denied any ties to the Chinese government and has claimed that it has never shared US user data with Chinese authorities.

"The United States has never found evidence that TikTok threatens its national security ," said Chinese diplomatic spokesman Wang Wenbin .
