The company NGINX Inc. was founded in 2011 in the US state of Delaware by Russians Igor Sysoev and Maxim Konovalov (its headquarters are located in San Francisco). In 2001, they created an open-source web server, and both Igor Sysoev and Maxim Konovalov were working at the Russian holding company Rambler at the time. Many millions of Internet sites have been created based on NGINX technologies, including those of such corporations as Netflix, Starbucks, McDonalds, Facebook, as well as Russian VK and Yandex.
In March 2019, the American corporation F5 Networks Inc. (Seattle, Washington), specializing in services for running multi-cloud applications, agreed to acquire NGINX Inc. and closed the deal in May of the same year, paying $670 million. Along with the Russian co-founders, NGINX shareholders at that time included Blue Cloud Ventures, E.Venture Capital Partners, Goldman Sachs, Index Ventures, MSD Capital, New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Runa Capital, Telstra Ventures, Infinity Venture Partners, Headline and three more venture funds. According to ComNews, from 2011 to 2018, NGINX conducted five investment rounds, during which it was able to attract a total of $84 million.
In December, Rambler went to court, finding that NGINX had violated its exclusive rights to the web server, but in April 2020, the Russian prosecutor's office closed the case. In the spring of 2021, Rambler's former owner, Alexander Mamut, through the Cypriot offshore company Lynwood Investments CY Ltd, which he controls, filed a lawsuit in the Northern District of California (San Jose branch) against NGINX, F5 Networks, Igor Sysoev, Maxim Konovalov, as well as the E.Venture Capital Partners and Runa Capital funds, demanding $750 million in damages. However, the California court dismissed the lawsuit in June 2021.
