Perhaps the actor himself will become the author of the first feature film shot in space.

Stick to the script
Altman and his colleagues, who were working on space films for IMAX, had no script: they were tasked with capturing events as they happened. Trying to tell the story as Cruise and Liman intended is the next level of complexity.

"In 2008, I shot my first feature film in space," Richard Garriott told KTBC. "My friend, writer Tracy Hickman, wrote the script, and the rest of the crew and I shot and edited the film, which also premiered on the space station."

Herriot's seven-minute film Apogee of Fear was created during his private flight to the space station, organized by Space Adventures.



To simplify the film's production, Herriot wrote special cheat sheets for the actors with lines and shot the scenes in the same order in which they appeared in the film, a rare occurrence in conventional filmmaking.

"Filming and controlling a camera in space is very difficult because of inertia," explains Herriot. "It's difficult for actors to stay in one position because of Newton's laws. Once you start moving, it's very difficult to stop."

An inspiring example

“I was in elementary school when ‘Top Gun’ came out. After watching that movie, I knew I wanted to be a Navy pilot. And so it was,” the NASA administrator and former Navy pilot said on the eve of the SpaceX launch. “If Tom Cruise could infect a child with a dream of the sky, why not try to do the same with space? Who knows, maybe the next Elon Musk will be among the audience?”

"Spacesuits, spaceship travel, going into orbit, flying to the Moon and Mars - all of this can really make kids dream about space," says Musk, who called Cruise's new project "a lot of fun" on Twitter.

Altman also sees this potential: “Movies with famous actors like Tom Cruise attract people’s attention. This is a great way to make viewers think about something important and inspire them to new achievements. Let only a few become astronauts or go to the ISS, but a huge number of people will be inspired by the achievements of human civilization.”
