For the past two months, I took a leap that most people today would consider unimaginable: I removed the SIM card from my phone and committed to living SIM-free for 60 days. No mobile data, no calls or texts outside of Wi-Fi zones. I wanted to see what would happen when I stripped away that constant tether to mobile connectivity. What began as a digital detox experiment soon evolved into a deeper reflection on how I relate to technology, communication, and even my own time. From dealing with inconvenience to rediscovering intentionality, the journey was far from easy—but eye-opening in ways I never expected.

The biggest challenge was navigating the practical limitations. I rely on two-factor authentication for almost everything, and many services still send codes via SMS. Without mobile data, I couldn’t check my maps on the go, call a rideshare, or stay in touch when outside of Wi-Fi coverage. I had to plan everything ahead—write down directions, schedule meetups precisely, and be more deliberate with communication. I reverted to using public Wi-Fi (often slow and sketchy), offline apps, and messaging friends special database in advance. At times, I felt disconnected and even a bit vulnerable, especially during emergencies or unexpected changes. But the flip side was that I became more self-reliant, creative, and mindful. I stopped mindlessly checking notifications and started appreciating the power of being fully present.

Perhaps the most surprising thing I learned was how much quieter my mind became. Without the buzz of incoming calls, pings, and data-fueled distractions, my attention span stretched. I read more books in two months than I had in the past year. I reconnected with hobbies I’d long shelved—writing, sketching, even cooking without background noise. My social interactions became more focused and intentional, as I had to coordinate them consciously instead of reacting to a random message thread. I also became more aware of the difference between availability and connection. Just because we’re always reachable doesn’t mean we’re actually connecting. When I finally reinserted my SIM card, I was determined not to let it reclaim the same power over my time and attention. Going SIM-free for 60 days taught me that we don’t always need to be connected to be in control—it’s often the opposite.
