The 10 billion yen appears to be coming from Son's personal assets, which are estimated to exceed 750 billion yen in total assets. Son currently holds 231,614,000 SoftBank shares (as of September 30, 2010), and dividing 10 billion yen by the number of shares he holds gives approximately 43.2 yen. The closing price on the business day before the donation announcement (April 3) was 3,290 yen, so a simple calculation that takes no other factors into account means that if SoftBank's stock price reaches 3,333 yen, Son will have made his money back.
So why did Son donate such a huge amount of money as 10 billion yen?
SoftBank dispatched a support team from Tokyo on the remove background image day the disaster occurred. Members of the recovery response team were gathered from all over the country, and the team that was ready went to the disaster site with relief supplies. Project leader Yoshihito Shimazaki (SoftBank Mobile Mobile Solutions Headquarters), who was stationed in the disaster area in Iwate, said:
"When I set foot in the disaster area and saw the overwhelming reality that you could never get from watching TV reports, I was speechless. The victims were just desperate to do what was in front of them. Wanting to restore operations as quickly as possible, they were working without taking any days off, only sleeping 2-3 hours a day. All of my subordinates were the same. They had completely forgotten what it meant to 'take a break' until they received instructions from headquarters to take a break."
Why did Masayoshi Son contribute 10 billion yen?
