In this post, the Academic and Quality Manager at Bureau Veritas University Centre , Ruth Ballesteros, reflects on the management of a University Centre, its training offer and how to improve student performance with procedures such as qualitative control of their grades or appropriate academic guidance.
Through the direction and monitoring, not only of students but also of teachers, a careful control can be carried out, within an Excellence Management System , over the learning process developed by students, both at the Course and group level, as well as at the individual level.
In order to assess the progress of students, the teacher facebook data will use qualitative data, avoiding quantitative data that are reduced to a mere enumeration of grades. He will take into account the results of objective tests, individual work and the completion and participation in collaborative work.
The professor must detect students with low performance and must inform the degree coordinators.
The coordinator of each degree must adopt the appropriate measures in relation to low-performing students , and in turn must inform the area management.
Among the responsibilities of the Director of the area of knowledge, there is the need to know both the progress of the students and the possible significant deviations .
In addition, at the end of each subject, the teachers and the coordinator may meet to record in a report all the information collected that allows them to assess the progress of the students. This report must include proposals for improving the degree or subject.
Likewise, with the data collected in the coordinator's report and those collected by the Academic Secretariat, a series of indicators must be calculated for each of the degrees taught at the Center.
Graduation Rate
The calculation of this rate estimates the percentage of students who complete their studies within the time provided for in the Study Plan or in one more Academic Year in relation to their call.
To assess this data, it must be taken into account that the Graduation rate will be affected by the dropout rate . Even if the Center had a significant student success rate, as there is a certain dropout rate during the period of an Academic Year, this percentage will reduce the Graduation rate. The Graduation rate must approach a value of at least 80% of students graduating in a maximum of two years.
