Philips cassettes
However, the truly revolutionary invention in 1963 by Philips engineer Lou Ottens of the first audio cassette on magnetic tape, the Compact Cassette, was a real breakthrough. Before its appearance, music was listened to on reel-to-reel tape recorders. The devices were bulky, and the tape had to be wound onto the reels by hand.
Compact Cassette was much more compact, cheaper to produce and more affordable than its predecessors. The audio cassette was not only a technical breakthrough: it changed the lives of many people. Recording music on cassette became cheaper and easier, thanks to which many musicians got the opportunity to promote their work and later became world stars. For 25 years (from 1963 to 1988) Philips sold about three billion cassettes.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Philips continued its work on canada number data improving the audio signal carrier: together with Sony, it released the first compact disc (CD). The collaboration with Sony continued in 1997 with the creation of the first DVD.
Medicine
And what about healthcare solutions, which are so important to the company today? Philips developed this direction in parallel with the invention of everyday devices and became a pioneer in many medical technologies.
Back in 1928, Professor Albert Bowers, an employee of the Philips laboratory, invented a portable X-ray machine that allowed patients to be examined at home. The spread of tuberculosis in the 20th century required the search for new solutions for its diagnosis. Philips technology helped to more effectively detect and combat the disease.
In 1939, the company launched the Oralix, the smallest X-ray machine for dental research. For many years, it set the standard in its class. Around the same time, on the recommendation of the Dutch General Health Inspectorate, Philips developed the first artificial respiration device, the Philips Respirator.
Second half of the 20th century
