Air New Zealand has unveiled a prototype of a three-tiered economy sleeping compartment so passengers can rest during long flights.

class aircraft with full sleeping berths — with pillows, sheets, blankets, a sleep light, and a curtain.

The carrier has filed a patent and trademark application for mexico number data the Economy Skynest for three-story sleeping accommodations with pairs of beds on each level. The dimensions of one sleeping area are 200 cm long and 58 cm wide.

In the future, the company may also add additional reading lights, USB ports and ventilation. The carrier worked on the project for three years, with more than 200 customers participating in the research.

Air New Zealand operates some of the longest flights in the world, said Mike Todd, chief marketing and customer service officer . In October 2020, the airline will begin operating flights from Auckland to New York, which will last up to 17 hours and 40 minutes.

Passengers will be able to book a bed in the Economy Skynest in addition to purchasing a ticket for a seat, the company said. It is not yet known how much the service will cost.

The company will make a decision on whether to use sleeper seats in 2021, after receiving results from the first year of flights on the Auckland-New York route. Air New Zealand believes that in the future it will be able to offer the technology to other carriers.

Skynest resembles a place for crew to rest between shifts on long-haul flights. The airline has not yet decided in which part of the plane to place sleeping areas. If necessary, they will remove several rows of seats, Air New Zealand said.
