British research company Comparitech has compiled a ranking of countries by cybersecurity level, based on the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) methodology. Researchers analyzed seven criteria, on the basis of which the overall assessment was given. These included: the share of mobile devices and PCs infected with malware, the number of hacker attacks aimed at stealing money, the number of remote attacks, the number of infections with cryptominers for illegal cryptocurrency mining; the preparedness of a particular country for hacker attacks and the relevance of cybersecurity legislation were also taken into account.
The more points a country scores, the worse its estonia mobile database situation is, and the rating is ranked from worst to best. The rating includes 60 countries — they were selected based on the fact that they could provide full statistics on all assessment criteria. Data on cyberattacks (except for countries' preparedness to counter cyberthreats and legislation in the field of protection) was taken for the past year.
The main conclusions of the experts include the following. The highest percentage of gadgets infected with malware was found in Bangladesh — 35.9% of all gadgets used by the country's population. For comparison: in Japan this figure is 1.34%, and in Russia — 10.1%. The largest number of infected PCs was found in Algeria — 32.4% (in Japan — 8.3%, in Russia — 23%). Germany suffered the greatest number of attacks aimed at stealing money, with 3% of users falling victim to such attacks (in Japan — 0.5%, and in Russia — 0.6%). The highest percentage of cryptominer attacks was found in Uzbekistan — 14.23%.
