“This has already started today with the move to a simpler approach within Kube itself called out-of-tree control,” he says. “We’ll continue to see growth in the policy-based deployment management space with tools like OPA Gatekeeper, Kyverno, and Argo CD. Also, be on the lookout for new policy engines that we haven’t seen yet.”

To continue investing in Kubernetes security - especially in terms of making it easier (without cutting corners) for teams to implement security and reducing its cost by building it into the tools they use to manage their clusters.

“Kubernetes distributions will start adding more security features directly into their distributions,” Newcomer says. “This will help improve the overall security of the distribution, as well as reduce the cost of securing a Kubernetes deployment.”

As is typical at these types of events, senior IT leaders offered a variety of thoughts—some on current trends, others on new or at least accelerating ones. Here are four that stood out.

1. How to become cyber resilient
There’s been a lot of discussion about preventing cyberattacks in the last few years. But this concept may be wrong, or at least too narrow. Professor Stuart Madnick, co-founder of the Cybersecurity Program at MIT Sloan (CAMS), has gone so far as to say that “prevention is useless,” given that supply chain attacks like Log4j, for example, are “zero-click vulnerabilities.” (That’s not to say that security scanning and other processes can’t reduce the number of vulnerabilities, but you shouldn’t expect to catch them all.)
