Let's start with Guadeloupe. It is the oldest overseas region since it has been part of France since 1635. It is located in the Antilles archipelago. It is a beautiful island with white sand beaches, coconut trees, large forests, and there is even a volcano, La Soufrière. It is known for its sugar cane fields, its exotic fruits, and of course, the famous Creole cuisine. This cuisine has a very particular influence, an African, Indian, European, Caribbean influence, and it gives an absolutely splendid mixture. It is also known for sugar, spices, and of course, rum. One of the regional languages spoken there is Creole.
Second, another Caribbean island, which is a French region, Martinique. It is nicknamed the flower island and it has an exceptional biodiversity. There are hummingbirds, hummingbirds, sea turtles, dolphins, whales, iguanas, and even cliff spiders, which are spiders. It is also, therefore, a paradise island with lots of forests. And it also has its volcano, Mount Pelée. The gastronomy also relies heavily on spices, Creole blood sausage or cod fritters, coconut juice, etc.
Third overseas region, Guyana. It is in South America and it is a very wooded region. There is a huge forest, the Amazon rainforest. As a result, the biodiversity is exceptional. There are indonesia whatsapp number data more than 8,000 species of plants and there are, of course, a huge number of animals: birds, jaguars, manatees, etc. Culturally, it is a special region, obviously. And there are nine distinct ethnic groups in this region, so, different tribes.
Fourth, Reunion. I love this island. I went there with my wife Céline in 2009 for our honeymoon and it is a sensational place. It is a tropical island located in the Indian Ocean. There are two volcanoes, the Piton des Neiges, which is extinct and which gave birth to the island, and the Piton de la Fournaise which is still active. It is also one of the most active volcanoes in the world. You will find beaches, lagoons, waterfalls, cirques. So, these are mountains in which you can go hiking. There are forests, there is fauna, flora, obviously. I have the impression that it is a little jewel placed on the Indian Ocean and in which you can really have completely different landscapes.
so the cultures are very different. You have had Indian, Malagasy, Creole, and even Chinese, Asian influences. So, you really have on this island, you find a lot of different cultures. And this is of course reflected from a religious point of view, since you are going to see churches, so, you have Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, which are all represented. And I was struck to see to what extent on this island, in the same way on Mauritius, which is not a French island but which is right next door, I was struck to see to what extent religions lived in peace and harmony there. This is something that we should, I think, take inspiration from in mainland France.
Fifth overseas region, Mayotte. It is also located in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and Africa. It is the newest French region. It has the third largest lagoon in the world. It is a splendid island, of course. Unfortunately, we hear a lot about it in the press, in the news, because of problems of poverty and violence. But all that will improve.
That's it for the French regions. I'm obviously not going to list all 101 departments, but I'd like to list a few of them, nonetheless, before moving on to a little quiz. Department 75, the department of Paris, we can't not mention it. It's the most emblematic and the best known. As we said, it's the center of everything in France. It's the financial center, it's the administrative center, it's the economic center and it's the cultural center, with all the buildings you know, of course, like Notre-Dame de Paris, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, the Arc de Triomphe, etc.
Department number 13 is that of… Bouches-du-Rhône, exactly. It is located in the PACA region, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and it has a very long history, notably thanks to the city of Marseille, which was founded by the Greeks in 600 BC, and which is therefore one of the oldest cities in Europe. It has experienced a lot of invasions, the Visigoths, the Franks, the Arabs, the Romans, etc. So, many peoples have invaded it. And Marseille is also a great football city, and it is, as we were saying earlier, the second largest city in France.
67 is the department of… Bas-Rhin, yes. Bas-Rhin is at the top, because we took the direction in which the Rhine flows. So, Haut-Rhin is at the bottom, and Bas-Rhin is at the top. 67. It is in the Grand Est, formerly Alsace, and we said it, since it is on the border with Germany, it is a city, well, it is a department that has changed a lot over the course of history. It was in France, then in Germany, then it came back to France, etc. So, it is a place that is very loaded from a historical point of view. The cuisine is, therefore, based on French and German influences. We drink white wine there, and of course, we can mention the Alsatian Christmas markets which are splendid.
If I tell you 29, you answer me… Finistère. Finistère which is a department located in Brittany. The city of Brest, which is located really far to the west, at the tip of Finistère, is a very, very well-known port.
Department 24 is the… Dordogne. We know this department thanks to prehistory, and in particular the Lascaux caves. We also talk a lot about the Dordogne for its role during the Hundred Years' War between France and England. And it is a region or a department very well known for its gastronomy, in particular for its wine and other dishes. And I mentioned my department of birth, 08, Les Ardennes, and a department in which I lived for a long time, Moselle, 57.
So, there you go, I hope you enjoyed it. It was a dense video. We wanted to try to give you a lot of information in this series. We did a lot of research, but of course, as usual, an error could have slipped in somewhere. If that's the case, I apologize. We worked a lot on the script. I was very careful when presenting this information to you, but we're never sure that there isn't a small error that has slipped in. So, if that's the case, don't hesitate to tell us and we apologize, obviously.
