Keep track of reported crawl errors, ideally daily for the first few weeks. Downloading these errors daily, crawling the reported URLs, and taking the necessary actions (i.e. implementing additional 301 redirects, fixing soft 404 errors) will help with early recovery. It is unlikely that you will need to redirect every 404 that is reported, but you should include redirects for the most important ones.
