1. Conference: Interpretation of Customary International Law – Methods, Interpretative Choices & The Role of Coherence. TRICI-law, together with PluriCourts and Prof. Pauline Westerman and Dr. Konstiantyn Gorobets from the University of Groningen, is organizing a one and a half day conference in the Hague. The conference has three main themes: i) methods of interpretation of customary international law; ii) variation of interpretative choices across international courts and tribunals; and iii) coherence as an approach or goal in the context of interpretation of customary international law. 2. Call for Abstracts: AI in the Public Sector (Asser Institute). The Asser Institute invites abstracts on the topic of ‘Law and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sector: From Principles to Practice and Policy’, for an interdisciplinary conference that will take place on 10 – 11 March 2022 in The Hague (subject to change). The conference seeks to generate insights on the principles, conditions, and methods that would allow to responsibly deploy AI in the public sphere. In order to develop solutions to the pressing challenges of AI, the ethical, legal, technical, and policy aspects must be addressed together. The conference will serve to build necessary bridges between disciplines, and to operationalise principles into practice and policy. 3. Justice for Atrocities: Dialogues and Encounters between Latin-America and Europe Conference. On 6 – 7 December 2022, the conference ‘Justice for Atrocities: Dialogues and Encounters between Latin-America and Europe’ will be hosted at Westminster Law School (United Kingdom) and the University of Jyväskylä (Finland). The organizing committee invites paper self employed database abstracts. The conference will be either online or in a hybrid form (part online, part in London), depending on the availability of funds and the epidemiological situation. The organisers, Dr. Marco Longobardo (Westminster) and Dr. Juan-Pablo Pérez-León-Acevedo (Jyväskylä), welcome proposal submissions from academics and other professionals. 4. Webinar ‘The Law of International Organizations Before Climate Change’. On 25 November at 10.00 am (CET), Cattolica University in Milan will host a conversation between Lorenzo Gasbarri and Jan Klabbers in the context of the webinar series ‘Climate Change as the Ultimate Grotian Moment(?)’, organised by Mariangela La Manna. The conference will tackle two main questions: ‘Where is the law of international organizations in climate change?’ and ‘where is climate change in the law of international organizations?’. The first question focuses on the institutional characteristics of the climate change regime and the status of so-called ‘informal’ institutions in international law. The scope of the second question is to situate environmental concerns in the law of international organizations, under which climate change is a threat, but also an opportunity to expand competences.
