Level 2: Beginning, Birth
Slowly parts of the organization are waking up: a fragmented awareness is emerging that something like a digital work environment exists. There are already various initiatives in the organization in the field of collaboration and social networking - these initiatives often overlap.
Organizations at this level notice the benefits of the initiatives on a small scale. When they are able to share the successes and others within the organization see the potential, the oil slick will indeed expand. That change and development are taking place is certain, but there is often (still) no driving force. That is why this is an intermediate phase that can take a long time, that is true.
Level 3: organized, visible
The digital work environment concept is taking shape. There are multiple initiatives in the field of collaboration, social networking and now the mobile context is also coming into view. The coherence is becoming visible and coordination of all initiatives is getting off the ground.
In organizations at this level, something really starts to happen, change becomes visible and noticeable. Because overarching coordination is slowly but surely introduced, a flywheel effect is created – the change continues. In many areas at the same time, where it becomes important to really monitor the coherence and keep a common goal in mind. To work on the basis of common frameworks. In this phase, real investments are often made in vision formation, strategy development and the systematic realization thereof. Here, setting up and implementing a good governance structure also becomes crucial.
Level 4: operational, sustainable
The digital work environment is commonplace and a fully integrated and essential part of daily work. The coordination of initiatives is firmly established and takes place across the organization.
Organizations at level 4 notice how everything starts to flow: processes are smooth austria mobile phone number list few things go wrong, the organization learns and develops very quickly and is flexible and agile.
Level 5: embedded, proactive
At the final, most advanced level, the digital work environment is an integral and fully embedded part of all working methods. The culture, leadership and all other dimensions are completely focused on sharing and ‘working out loud’ – a way of working in which you openly say what you are doing or going to do, and people can clearly see how you are doing your work.
Organizations at this level are the mind-blowing ninjas of the global economy, or at least of their sector, industry or market. They are miles ahead of their competitors (unless they are at the same level), and perform brilliantly year after year.
After all these descriptions, here you see how the three perspectives, nine dimensions and five levels ultimately come together in the Maturity Scale – and in passing I can also explain the nine dimensions in more detail:

Comments on Scorecard and Maturity Scale
Finally, a small critical note. My article shows that I am very enthusiastic about the tools that McConnell is now introducing. However, there are two elements that I find somewhat underexposed or missing in this model, especially when it comes to determining vision and strategy:
